Position
We are seeking a Lab Director – Core Lab to serve as the CLIA-designated Laboratory Director for our new facility in Tempe, AZ. This is a part-time, consultant role (1099), requiring approximately 4–6 hours per month. Day-to-day operations will be delegated to the on-site Core Manager, while the Lab Director will provide high-level oversight of testing methods, regulatory compliance, CLIA compliance, and overall laboratory quality.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the CLIA Laboratory Director for Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology testing
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CMS, and Arizona state regulations for high-complexity testing
  • Review and approve SOPs, validation studies, QC, proficiency testing, and corrective actions
  • Oversee staff competency evaluations (delegated daily to Chemistry Supervisor)
  • Conduct on-site visits at least twice per year and document director-level activities
  • Remain accessible to laboratory staff for consultation and compliance issues

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, or DCLS in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science)
  • Qualified to serve as a CLIA High Complexity Laboratory Director under 42 CFR 493.1443–1445
  • Licensed or registered in Arizona as required by state law
  • Experience with hematology and high-complexity testing environments
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
Candidates holding CLIA-recognized board certifications are strongly encouraged to apply, including HCLD(ABB), DABCC (ABCC), FCAP (ABP Clinical Pathology), D(ABMM), ABMLI, ABCC Diplomate, or equivalent board-certified laboratory director credentials.

Approximately 4–6 hours per month
Must perform at least two on-site visits per year, at least four months apart
