Position
Rocky Mountain Laboratories is seeking a Lab Director to serve as the CLIA-designated Laboratory Director for our new Austin, TX facility. This is a part-time, 1099 consultant role focused on molecular diagnostics. A background or specialty in pathology is strongly preferred.

The Lab Director will provide high-level oversight of all testing activities, ensuring compliance with CLIA, CMS, and state regulations. Day-to-day operations will be managed by the on-site laboratory leadership team, while the Director provides strategic and regulatory oversight, reviews validations and SOPs, and maintains overall quality standards.

Schedule:
Approximately 4–6 hours per month.
Must complete at least two on-site visits per year, spaced at least four months apart.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the CLIA Laboratory Director for molecular diagnostics (pathology specialty preferred).
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CMS, and Texas state regulations for high-complexity testing.
  • Review and approve validation studies, SOPs, QC logs, proficiency testing, and corrective actions.
  • Oversee staff competency evaluations (delegated to on-site supervisors).
  • Provide director-level guidance for compliance, quality, and test performance.
  • Conduct and document on-site visits at least twice annually.
  • Remain accessible to laboratory personnel for consultation on scientific and compliance matters.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, or DCLS in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science).
  • Qualified to serve as a CLIA High-Complexity Laboratory Director under 42 CFR 493.1443–1445.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in Texas, as required by state law.
  • Demonstrated experience with high-complexity testing environments and molecular methods.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.

Education:
Candidates holding CLIA-recognized board certifications are strongly encouraged to apply, including:
HCLD(ABB), DABCC (ABCC), FCAP (ABP Clinical Pathology), D(ABMM), ABMLI, or ABCC Diplomate (or equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience directing a clinical laboratory specializing in molecular or pathology testing.
  • Knowledge of molecular workflows and assay validation processes.
  • Experience supporting CLIA audits or regulatory inspections.

Job Type:
1099 Independent Contractor (Consultant)

Salary:
$1,800 per month

Ability to commute/relocate:
Austin, TX: Local candidates preferred; must be available for required on-site visits.
