Position

Rocky Mountain Laboratories is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Medical Specimen Courier to support daily transport operations between Tempe, AZ, and Salt Lake City, UT. This full-time role requires early-morning air travel and strict adherence to time-sensitive logistics.

Each shift begins with specimen pickup at our Tempe office, followed by boarding the first available commercial flight to Salt Lake City (typically between 5:00–7:00 AM). Couriers deliver the specimens upon landing, then return to Phoenix the same day.

This role is ideal for someone with healthcare or laboratory experience who is highly reliable, comfortable navigating airports independently, and confident flying multiple times per week. Strong technology skills are essential, as daily tasks include checking in for flights, managing digital communications, updating transport logs, and responding to time-critical changes in routing or logistics.

Flights are booked based on company needs, and we are unable to accommodate personal airline preferences.

Responsibilities:

  • Pick up medical specimens in Tempe prior to the scheduled flight departure
  • Package, secure, and transport specimens in compliance with all company and regulatory protocols (including HIPAA and DOT)
  • Board the earliest available commercial flight to Salt Lake City (typically 5:00–7:00 AM departure)
  • Ensure specimen integrity is maintained throughout travel
  • Deliver specimens immediately upon arrival in Salt Lake City
  • Complete return flight to PHX the same day and report status to dispatch

  • Communicate regularly with dispatch, logistics, and lab staff to ensure smooth coordination
  • Conduct daily quality checks of supplies and transport materials (e.g., coolers, ice packs, seals)
  • Report any transport-related incidents or concerns immediately
  • Comply with all airport, airline, and TSA regulations
  • Represent the company professionally when interacting with airline personnel or healthcare staff
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of experience in a healthcare setting handling patient specimens (e.g., phlebotomy, lab assistant, or clinical support role)
  • 1+ year of courier or transportation experience (medical transport strongly preferred)
  • Experience flying commercially and comfort navigating airport logistics independently
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to adhere to tight timelines
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, with proficiency using mobile technology such as flight apps, GPS tools, messaging platforms, and digital scheduling systems.
  • Must be able to comply with HIPAA, DOT, TSA, and airline protocols
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs of transport materials (e.g., coolers, ice packs)
  • Must be based in or near Tempe, AZ, with the ability to commute to PHX airport by 4:00 AM

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with chain of custody or secure transport procedures
  • Familiarity with time-sensitive or temperature-controlled logistics
  • Previous experience working in clinical or diagnostic laboratory settings
  • Experience coordinating with dispatch or logistics teams
  • Frequent commercial flight experience in a professional setting
  • Familiarity with airport procedures, airline apps, and flight logistics
  • Experience navigating travel delays and rebookings while maintaining timely delivery
  • Willingness to obtain TSA PreCheck or Clear to improve airport efficiency
